Give each contractor the same sketch, height, product specification and gate plan. Request a quantity breakdown and describe the required finish. Ask which materials, hardware, reinforcement and footing details are included. Identify who confirms boundaries, approvals and utility locations.
Keep demolition, disposal, delivery and difficult excavation as separate lines. Request the tax treatment, payment schedule, expected sequence and exclusions in writing. Clarify whether regrading, vegetation removal, old concrete extraction or damage repairs are outside the scope.
A useful quote records its date, validity, currency and assumptions. Attach the planner PDF and label it as an estimate for discussion. Do not present a materials calculation as an engineered specification. Compare revisions against the same layout so a cheaper quote is not simply omitting a gate or changing the height.
