Gates

Plan gates before ordering materials

List who or what must pass through each opening: people, bins, garden equipment or vehicles. Measure the actual item and its turning path. A gate leaf width is not necessarily the clear opening, and neither is necessarily the center-to-center spacing between supporting posts.

Define access before ordering

List who or what must pass through each opening: people, bins, garden equipment or vehicles. Measure the actual item and its turning path. A gate leaf width is not necessarily the clear opening, and neither is necessarily the center-to-center spacing between supporting posts.

Check the chosen gate kit for hinge and latch clearance, ground clearance and post reinforcement. Mark the swing arc on the sketch. Keep gates clear of slopes, steps, parked vehicles and public access routes. Sliding systems need room beside the opening and a suitable support arrangement.

The planner accepts gate start and width between post centers so geometry stays consistent. Translate the required clear opening using the selected hardware dimensions before entering it. Count leaves, frames, latches and hinges separately from fence boards. Pool barriers and automated gates need applicable local safety requirements checked.
